What's Showcase #4 worth in 2024?
The highest graded copy is a NM+ 9.6 that sold one time in 2009 before this age of hero movie and exploding values and it brought $177,000. That same copy now could easily fetch half a million or more! There are only 8 copies over VF/NM 9.0. A FN 6.0 recently brought nearly $27,000 after pulling in barely over a third of that in 2010 at just under $10,000. Very low grades such as GD 2.0 copies are fetching nearly $8,000 compared to just $1,500 in 2009. It’s hard to say what the pace will be in the near future but as long as you are buying to hold for a time this is an absolute guarantee for profit.
Why is this comic book valuable?
Showcase #4 is THE defining book of the Silver Age. Literally. National Publications (DC Comics) returned to its roots after the uproar over Seduction of the Innocent and it’s hysteria creating author, Frederic Wertham. Superman and Batman hadn’t gone anywhere but Flash had stopped with Flash Comics 104 in February 1949. There is only one comic book you could possibly own that started the second great age of comics and this is it. When you put all of this in perspective it is quite mind boggling. Flash’s reintroduction led to Green Lantern’s reintro which led to the Brave and the Bold #28 which led to the Justice League of America. The head of DC Comics would go golfing with the head of Marvel Comics who would be told about the success of the seminal super team. This knowledge would lead the head of Marvel Comics to issue an order to Stan Lee to create a super team - the Fantastic Four. And the rest, as they say, is history!
